The Blackfoot Invitational Tournament started in 1979 and was played in the Crowfoot School Gymnasium. It took the energies of a few people to bring the dream of an international tournament to reality, and it began in the minds of the Old Blackfoot Centrals Basketball Club.
Rick Running Rabbit was the spark plug of that group—and he—along with Ron Many Heads and Charlie Duck Chief formed the first Blackfoot Invitational Tournament Committee.
Running Rabbit was the organizer and the tournament director. Organizers faced many adversities, including securing accommodation for players and spectators from other reserves in the first year of the Blackfoot Invitational. Despite all the obstacles, the tournament proceeded. The tournament format is a true double knockout with a sudden death final.
In 1979, 200 spectators crowded the old Crowfoot School gym to watch the final men’s and ladies games., the Browning Reds from Montana emerged victors from the first 3-day, 10 team tournament defeating the Browning Town pumps. On the ladies’ side, the Bullhorn Pandas from the Blood Reserve emerged victorious over Hobbema Blue Starz in the first 6-team ladies’ tournament.
The Blackfoot Invitational Tournament was moved from the old Crowfoot School gym to its present location, the Siksika Deerfoot Sportsplex in 1985.
From the inception of the Blackfoot Invitational, the tournament has attracted the top teams from all over Western Canada and the Mid-Western United States. Some of the farthest teams to play were from Santa Clara, California and Florida.
This tournament was created by a community of Nation members who love the game of basketball, and the Blackfoot Invitational tournament prides itself on being a non-profit event and relies on the support of sponsors to ensure its success. The last Blackfoot Invitational Tournament to take place was in 2014. Learn more about the history of the Blackfoot Invitational from Ira McHugh
After a eight-year hiatus, Siksika Recreation under Siksika Health Services is proud to return the pride and excitement to the Deerfoot Sportsplex and Siksika Nation community. The 36th Blackfoot Invitational will take place on May 4-6, 2023.
