On April 26, 2021, Alberta Premier Jason Kenney announced the easing of restrictions in continuing cares homes in the province starting May 10th, allowing each resident to designate up to four friends or family members as visitors.

This restriction for family visits at the Siksika Elders Lodge were eased in early-mid February 2021 for the mental health and well-being of our Siksika Elders Lodge Residents. However, visits were based by appointment so that Residents and Staff would be prepared to complete this safely.

  • Siksika Elders Lodge will continue to request that family members or members of the public that would like to visit their family/friend member at SEL or access Siksika Elders Services make appointments as safety continues to be a priority at SEL for our Residents and Staff.
  • Visitors will continue to be screened upon entry and will be required to wear PPE (masks, faceshields or goggles) and complete Hand Hygiene prior to entry.
  • Visits are encouraged during visiting hours of 9:00am – 6:00pm or unless special arrangements are made for after regular visiting hours.

SEL remains in contact with Public Health officials in Siksika Health Services, Indigenous Services Deputy Medical Officer of Health and Environmental Public Health Officer for guidance on all Provincial Restrictions.

Alberta’s CMOH (Chief Medical Officer of Health) has always indicated that the approach needs to be local, not regional, depending on the local risk, which may be different from other areas in the province. Risk is considered Low at this time to SEL Residents and Staff, however, due to the high numbers within the Province, only essential travel is still recommended for Residents (Medical or personal needs.)

Residents travelling for essential purposes are supplies with masks, hand sanitizer and if requested a safety plan is developed with the Residents or their family.
